The Relationship Between Structure and Meaning in the Arabic Language: A Study in Semantic Syntax

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between syntactic structure and meaning in the Arabic language within the framework of semantic grammar. This topic represents a central issue in linguistic studies concerned with understanding how meaning is constructed through linguistic structures. The research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, supported by inductive and comparative methods, through analyzing key syntactic phenomena such as word order variation, ellipsis, and structurally similar constructions, in order to explore their role in shaping and directing meaning.

The findings reveal that syntactic structure is not merely a formal arrangement of words, but rather an active component in meaning construction. It plays a crucial role in highlighting meanings, defining relationships between linguistic elements, and interpreting utterances within their contexts. The study also demonstrates that syntactic phenomena serve multiple semantic functions, including emphasis, specification, and brevity, reflecting the functional nature of the Arabic language.

Furthermore, the research highlights that the roots of semantic grammar can be traced back to classical Arabic linguistic heritage, particularly in the works of Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani and Ibn Jinni, confirming that the integration of structure and meaning is not a modern concept but an extension of an established linguistic tradition. The study concludes by emphasizing the importance of adopting an integrative approach that bridges traditional Arabic grammar and modern linguistic theories.
