This study aims to examine the role of environmental education in enhancing environmental awareness among citizens by analyzing the concept of environmental education, the dimensions of environmental awareness, and the major challenges facing its implementation in educational institutions. The study employed a descriptive-analytical approach and drew on a range of relevant international and Arab studies. The findings indicate that environmental education plays a fundamental role in developing environmental awareness across its three dimensions: cognitive, affective, and behavioral. It contributes to expanding individuals’ knowledge of environmental issues, fostering positive attitudes toward the environment, and encouraging sustainable practices and behaviors. The results further reveal a positive correlation between environmental education and students’ environmentally responsible behavior. However, the study identifies several challenges, including insufficient resources, inadequate teacher training, and weak community partnerships. The study recommends updating environmental education content, strengthening collaboration between educational and community institutions, and expanding awareness programs to support sustainable environmental development and enhance community participation in environmental protection.
