Punctuation Errors in English Writing Faced by Second-Year Students at the Faculty of Languages, Al Khums, Libya

Abstract

This research deals with the errors in punctuation marks made by second year students at the Faculty of Languages, Alkhums, Libya. The objective of the current research is to explore the frequent punctuation errors made by students and to determine the reasons for such errors in their English writings. A descriptive qualitative methodology was adopted for conducting the present research. English writing assignments by second year students formed the source of data, which was analyzed using Error Analysis Methodology. The results showed that punctuation mistakes related to capitalization, commas, periods, apostrophes, and question marks were commonly observed among others. From the findings above, it is clear that some students do not have adequate knowledge regarding the rules of punctuation in English, hence, encounter challenges in using these punctuation in writing exercises. There are several reasons behind this problem, such as interference from the Arabic language, lack of practice in writing, inadequate reading habits, and lack of emphasis on teaching punctuation in English lessons. It is, therefore, evident that enhancing students’ competence in punctuation involves teaching punctuation, writing exercises, and provision of positive feedback and learning materials.
